GOAL (Phase 3):

Picture
  • Relax! Do not start Phase 3 until you have a better feel for your students' reading (ZPD) range, AR book levels, and the Renaissance Place site.
  • Use the Diagnostic report to learn how your students are doing. Go to Accelerated Reader>Reports>Reading Practice>Diagnostic-Reading Practice. (See sample.)
  • Set Certification Levels. To motivate my second graders, I start them on Ready Reader (first certificate) so that they can easily earn their first certificate/prize. Go to Accelerated Reader>Record Books and Goals>Reading Practice Certifications. (See sample.)
  • For Goal Setting, go to Accelerated Reader>Record Books and Goals>Reading Practice Goals. (See sample.)
  • Set goals by looking at the GE, Suggested ZPD, % Correct, Reading Time, and Book Level. (Renaissance Place calculates points for you.)
  • Start on low end of ZPD. Reading Time: 15 minutes engaged time means about a 35 minute reading period.
  • Use Goal Setting Chart to adjust goals as needed.
  • Teach students how to check their Progress (sample) and Bookshelf (sample).
  • Print out Reader Certification Certificates (sample). Go to Accelerated Reader>Reports>Reading Practice>Reader Certification Certificates.
  • Mrs. Baron says we have funds to buy prizes as incentives for Accelerated Reader. As suggested by Renaissance Learning, prizes will be based on students reaching goals and/or certifications, not just on points!
